Day 1 - Missoula

We got off to an auspicious start when we realized about 2 miles from home this morning we had not updated our GPS with Idaho, Montana, or Wyoming information. Back to the house to get that taken care of, we then were off for a 7-hour drive straight on I-90.

After passing over the Columbia River it was new territory for me - I had never traveled here before. The scenery changed from green to desert and was pretty uninteresting for a long while. But the time clicked along between books on tape and our satellite radio - and David reading the history of Yellowstone while I drove.

Some quick facts: Yellowstone was our first national park. It is the size of Delaware and Rhode Island together. It is essentally a huge caldera (crater) formed 640,000 years ago when the volcano erupted. It doesn't look much like a crater today because molten lava kept spewing out for several thousand years and filled it up.

The highlight so far was seeing Bruno in Montana.

Because we were oblivious to the fact that we had crossed a timeline and lost an hour, instead of showing up at the theater really early (in case it was a sellout its first Saturday night) we arrived just as the previews were ending and the movie starting.

It was about 3/4 full. David saw a few people leave but most endured. They didn't laugh so much but we were rolling in the aisles.

We are staying in a lovely B&B on the outskirts of Missoula. Since we lost an hour we're off to bed for an early start tomorrow.
